Mark is being introduced at the instance of the Ministry of Environment and
Forests (MEF), Government of India. The ECO Mark shall be administered by
the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the BIS Act, 1986 as per the
Resolution No. 71 dated 21 February 1991 published in the Gazette of the
Government of India. For a product to be eligible for ECO Mark, it shall also
carry the Standard Mark of the BIS, besides meeting additional optional
environment friendly requirements/

' 10 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ECO MARK
10.1 General Requirements
10.1.1 The product shall conform to the requirements of quality and performance
as specified in the standard.
10.1.2 The manufacturer shall produce to BIS environmental consent clearance
from the concerned State Pollution Control Board as per the provisions of the
Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and Air (Prevention and
Control of Pollution) Act f 1981 alongwith the authorization, if required under the
Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, while applying for ECO Mark.
10.2 Specific Requirements
The product shall conform to the specific requirements given for ECO Mark
under relevant clauses of this standard.
NOTC — Hie manufacturer shall provide documentary evidence by way of certificate or
declaration to this effect to the Bureau of Indian Standards while applying for ECO Mark.'

9. FOREWORD
M Thlt Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was
edpptcd by the Bureau of Indian Standards on
23 September 1988, after the draft finalized by
the Furniture Sectional Committee had been
approved fay the Civil Engineering Division
Council.
0.2 This standard was first published in 1971.
In this revision, the tests for finished surface have
been included and dimensions o£ tables have been
modified. The revised standard also makes
reference to the recent Indian Standards for
various types of materials allowed in the stan-
dard.
0.3 This standard does not restrict unduly the
architectural and decoration possibilities in bed-
room. Therefore, minimum characteristics of
and functional requirements are

0*4 This standard contains 3.7 which calls for
agreement between the purchaser and the sup*
plier, and Appendix A which gives information
to be supplied by the purchaser.
0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a parti-
cular requirement of this standard is complied
with, the final value, observed or calculated,
expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall
be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*.
The number of significant places retained in the
rounded off value should be the same as that of
the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard coverf the requirements for
materials, sixes, construction and finish of wooden
bedside table for residential purposes excluding
central table, dressing tabfe, etc.
2. TERMINOLOGY
2.1 For the purpose of this standard, definition
given in IS : 4415-1974* shall apply.
3. MATERIALS
3-1 Wood Particle Board— Wood particle
board required for the manufacture of wooden
bedside table shall conform to IS : 3087-l?85t
and shall be either the flat-pressed single layer
or fiat pressed 3-tayer type. Wood particle
boards, where fiaHhed with suitable baking
paints or enamel finishes, shall be ma nu factured
With only BWR type of adhesives like phenol
formaldehyde.

3.2 For wooden bedside table, decorative
veneered type, decorative veneered particle board
shall conform to IS : 3097-1980* and of the speci-
fied timber facing shall be used for the sides.
Usually decorative timber is specified as figured

form to IS: 1$59-I979t and shall be of Grade 1
or 2, where iir-drying finishes are adopted; and
Grade 1 only where suitable oven-drying finishes

3.4 Plywood?*- Plywood shall conform to Grade
BWR and Type BB oflS : 303*1973t Any of
the three gradfcs, namely, BWR, WWR And CWR

be finished with suitable air drying paints,

IS : 1328-1982*.
3.5 Solid Wood Components — Any of the
species of timber recommended for furniture and
cabinet making in lSf399-1963t shall be used
in the manufacture of tables. The wood used
shall be seasoned timber, with the moisture con-
tent as permissible for different climatic zones in
IS : 287-1973J. The specification of * wood shall
conform to IS : 1331-1977§. Preservative treat-
ment shall be given to the concealed components
of non-durable wood and sap wood of durable
wood in accordance with IS : 401-1982 II .
3.6 Adhesive — Adhesive used for joining shall
conform to IS : 849-19741 IS : 851-1978*+,
IS : 852-1969tt or IS : 4835-1979Jt
3.7 Decorative Plastic Laminate — Decora-
tive plastic laminate used shall conform to
IS : 2046-1969§§, and shall be of the design and
finish as prescribed by the purchaser.
3.8 Wooden screws, wooden dowel pins and
other hardware shall conform to the relevant
Indian Standards, wherever they exist.
3.9 Paints, enamels, polish and varnish shall
conform to the relevant Indian Standards,
wherever they exist for air-drying as well as
stoving finishes,
4. DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES
4.1 The recommended size of wooden bedside
tables are given below:
Length ( Max ) — 450 mm
Width ( Max ) — 450 mm
Height ( Max ) — 450 mm
However, tables of length greater than 450 mm
may be made, if required by the purchaser.
4.2 Tolerances — The overall dimensions speci-
fied above shall not vary more than ± 5 mm.
4.3 The wooden bedside table shall be rectangu-
lar at all the measurable surfaces within a

of the rectangle.
5. FABRICATION
5.1 The side and top panel shall be one piece
panel prepared for joinery. In case of veneered
particle board, wood lipping of not less than
12 mm thickness should be provided. In case of
unveneered particle board, wood lipping of not
less than 12 mm thickness shall be fixed by
tongue and groove joint with a minimum recess
of 5 mm. If desired by the customers, unlipped
side and rop panel of unveneered particle board
shall be supplied, where the edges should be
sealed with putty or filler.
5.3 Side and top panels of the bedside table
shall be made from wood particle boards or
veneered particle boards, blockboards or plywood
as specified in 3.
6. ASSEMBLY
6.1 The various components shall be assembled
by means of glue and screws securely fixed under
pressure. Before driving screw, pilot hole should
be driven into the wood panel and the screw
should be dipped in glue before driving in.
7. STRENGTH AND STABILITY TESTS
7.1 The tables may be tested for strength and
stability in accordance with the methods of tests
described in 7.1.1 and 7.1.2.
7.1.1 Strength of Tables — Table may be tes-
ted for strength ( test level 1 ) in accordance with
IS : 5967 ( Part 1 )-1988*. Tables shall not show
any sign of defect.
7.1.2 Stability of Tables — Tables may be
tested for stability in accordance with IS ; 5967
(Part2)-1988t.
8. FINISH
8.1 Finishing shall be done in accordance with
IS : 2338 ( Part 1 )-1967f. Clear lacquer, mela-
mine resin based paints or polyurethane paints,
when used, shall be applied according to manu-
facturer's instructions.
9. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENT OF
FINISH
9.1 The wooden table top shall have a smooth
finish on the surface and the sides, and shall be
delivered in a neat and dry form.
9*2 Resistance of the Surface to Dry Heat —
The surface of the wooden table tops shall be

tested for resistance to dry heat in accordance
™th IS : 5807 ( Part 1 )-1975*. The minimum
qualifying average rating shall conform to 7 of
IS: 5807 ( Part D-1975*.
9,3 Resistance of the Surface to Wet Heat —
The surface of the table tops shall be tested for
resistance to wet heat in accordance with
IS : 5807 ( Part 2 )-1975t- The minimum average
rating shall conform to 7 of IS : 5807 ( Part 2 )-
19751.
9*4 Resistance of Surface to Marking by
Oils and Fats — The test sample surface of
table shall conform to 5 and 6 of IS : 5807
( Part 3 )- 197 It when tested in accordance with
IS:5807(Part3)-197lt.
9.5 Resistance to Surface to Marking by
Liquids — The surface of the test sample of
tables shall be tested in accordance with IS : 5807
(Part 4)-1975§. The minimum qualifying
average rating shall conform to 8 of IS : 5807
( Part 4 )-1975§.
9.6 Resistance of Surface to Mechanical
Damage — The surface of the test sample shall
be tested for impact, cross-cut and scrape test in
accordance with IS : 5807 ( Part 6 )-1978 II . The
rating shall conform to 5.3 of IS : 5807 ( Part 6 )-
1978 II ■

10. PACKING
10.1 All the component parts shall be packed
after wrapping with suitable waterproof material
in such a way that no damage is caused to them
during transit.
10.2 The purchaser may require the wooden
tables to be supplied in knocked down condition,
in which case, the manufacturer shall supply
the components fully for quick joining and shall
supply the purchaser complete details and instruc-
tions for fixing and pack the components in
wooden crates after wrapping with waterproof
material.
11. MARKING
11.1 All wooden bedside tables shall be marked
with the name of the manufacturer or his recog-
nized trade-mark indentifying the manufacturer
and the type of bedside table.
11.1.1 Bedside table may also be marked with
the Standard Mark.
Note — The use of the Standard Mark is governed
by the provisions of ihe Bureau of Indian Standards
Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made there-
under. The Standard Mark on products covered by an
Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have
been produced to comply with the requirements of that
standard under a well defined system of inspection,
testing and quality control which is devised and super-
vised by BIS and operated by the producer, standard
marked products arc also continuously checked by BlS
for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard.
Details of conditions under which a licence for the use
of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers
or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of
Indian Standards.

( Clause 04 )
INFORMATION TO BE SUPPLIED BY THE PURCHASER
A-L DETAILS
A- 1.1 The purchaser shall supply the following
information to the supplier along with the
order:
a) Type and size of bedside table;
b) Finish required, whether painted or poli-
shed or waxed as the case may be; and
c) Where alternative methods of construction
or finish are specified, the same shall be
clearly stated in the order.
